Sophomore Checklist

  • Continue to study hard and do well in school.

  • Take the PSAT. This is a shorter versions of the SAT that can give you an early projection of how you might score on the test. It is also great a practice instrument that will help you score even better on the tests that really count.

  • Establish strong time management skills. Continue to improve your reading and writing skills.

  • Keep a folder or list of your accomplishments, awards, extracurricular/volunteer activities, and leadership positions. This will be helpful in filling out job, college, and scholarship applications later.

  • Begin or update your Cal State Apply Student Planner.

  • Visit college web sites, attend local college fairs, collect college literature and talk with school representatives.  Get on their mailing lists!

  • Talk with college students or recent college graduates who you know and ask about their college experiences.

  • Begin locating sources of financial aid, particularly scholarships.

  • Get involved in extracurricular activities you’re genuinely interested in and to which you are willing to commit the time.

  • Be a leader on your teams, in study groups, and in your activities. Colleges want to see you’ve had an impact on your teams, clubs, groups and activities you’re involved in.  So be an active participant in all you do.

  • Volunteer in your community

  • Think about several career possibilities and learn how much education is required for each job.  Explore careers and job opportunities in those careers.

  • Meet with your guidance counselor and let them get to know you and your goals, career aspirations, and schools you are considering.

  • Your 10th and 11th grade GPAs are the most important years for college admissions.
